Forestry plans seminar on biodiversity<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A one-day seminar on biodiversity in Indonesia
\nwill be held here on Saturday by the directorate general of
\nForest Protection and Nature Conservation.<\/p>\n
The seminar, which is intended to increase the participation
\nof local people in forest management and development, will focus
\non \"Biodiversity for the People's Welfare.\" The seminar is also
\ndesigned to inform the public of the importance of forest
\nbiodiversity and increase coordination between government
\noffices, research and training centers and non-governmental
\norganizations (NGOs) which are involved in the management of
\nnature reserves.<\/p>\n
The seminar is expected to be attended by about 200
\nparticipants coming from the ministry of forestry, the ministry
\nof environment, research and training centers and NGOs throughout
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
Among the speakers are former minister of environment Prof.
\nDr. Emil Salim, Dr. Herman Haeruman from the Indonesian Wildlife
\nSociety and Aca Sugandhi from the ministry of environment.<\/p>\n
A proposal for the seminar issued by the directorate general
\nof Forest Protection and Nature Conservation reported that,
\nalthough Indonesia covers only 1.3 percent of the world's land,
\nit has a significantly high level of biodiversity.<\/p>\n
About 12 percent or 515 species of mammals in the world can be
\nfound in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The government has already launched various conservation
\nefforts such as stipulating certain forest areas serve as
\nnational parks, nature reserves, tourist forests, hunting grounds
\nand grand forestal parks. These areas cover about 50 million
\nhectares of Indonesia's forest land.<\/p>\n
The proposal said that, although government protection has
\nbeen imposed, they were not yet able to entirely guarantee
\nsuccessful natural resources preservation.<\/p>\n
This is mainly due to a conflict of interest between the need
\nto preserve the forest and to use its resources for the benefit
\nof the people who make their living from it. (10)<\/p>",
