        "content": "<p>Forestry ministry to map forests<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The forestry ministry and the National Coordinating<br>\nAgency for Surveying and Mapping signed a memorandum of<br>\nunderstanding on Thursday for a joint project to map out the<br>\ncountry's forests.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the ministry's forestry planning body, Boen M.<br>\nPurnama, said the move was needed to provide accurate data and<br>\ninformation on forests in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The cooperation, which will last five years, will start with<br>\npilot projects in South Kalimantan and West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>Boen earlier said the ministry did not have accurate data on<br>\n60 million hectares of forest in the country, including the rate<br>\nof deforestation.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has lost more than 75 percent of its forest over the<br>\npast few decades. Over the past five years, some 43 million<br>\nhectares of Indonesia's forest, the equivalent of half of<br>\nKalimantan island, has been destroyed. -- JP<\/p>",
