After reading a news story in Media Indonesia on July 28
\ntitled New forestry minister should be able to develop
\nsustainable forests, I would like to suggest the following.<\/p>\n
The government has asserted that foreign exchange receipts
\nfrom the forestry sector remain one of its main sources of
\nincome. Therefore, the government should take short-term steps,
\nsuch as canceling the payment of the reforestation fund (DR) and
\nforest resources royalty (PSDH) three years in advance,
\ncanceling the value-added tax on timber and the building and land
\ntax (PBB) on forest concession areas as they are already included
\nin the PSDH, eradicating illegal logging, preventing the
\nsmuggling of timber and prohibiting the export of logs. In the
\nabsence of speedy short-term steps, the bankruptcy of the
\nforestry sector, about which the general chairman of the
\nIndonesian Association of Forestry Companies (APHI), Adiwarsita
\nAdinegoro, has expressed fear for, will become a reality.<\/p>\n
Bankruptcy is imminent as long as the government shows dualism
\nin its attitude to the forestry sector by letting it continue in
\nthe prevailing situation on the one hand but issuing unreasonable
\nregulations on the other.<\/p>\n
