Forest firms all set for labeling<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Fifty of Indonesia's forest concessionaires will
\nbe examined to qualify for ecolabeling certification, which will
\nbe required for the exportation of wood products in the coming
\nyears, an executive of the country's forestry association says.<\/p>\n
\"The association has selected 50 concessionaires which we
\nthink should qualify for ecolabeling certificates. It was not the
\nconcessionaires who forwarded this idea but it was us,\" Hendro
\nPrastowo, executive chairman of the Indonesian Forestry Society,
\nwas quoted by Antara as saying in New York on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Hendro was in New York to accompany Minister of Forestry
\nDjamaludin Suryohadikusumo for a meeting on sustainable
\ndevelopment with the United Nations.<\/p>\n
The executive did not identify the 50 concessionaires, nor
\nwhen the ecolabeling process will take place.<\/p>\n
The International Tropical Timber Organization, the main
\ngoverning body of global tropical timber trade, has ruled that by
\n2000 all exported wood products from tropical forests must be
\nproduced under environmentally-friendly conditions stipulated in
\necolabeling certificates.<\/p>\n
No such requirement is imposed on wood products from mild
\nclimate forests.<\/p>\n
Timber is a major source of foreign exchange for Indonesia,
\nwhich exported wood products worth nearly US$5.5 billion in 1993,
\nalmost 15 percent of the country's total exports.<\/p>\n
There are around 500 forest concessionaires in Indonesia at
\npresent.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, the appraisal for the ecolabeling process will
\nbe conducted by an independent body called the Ecolabeling
\nFoundation, which is chaired by a former state minister of
\nenvironment, Emil Salim.(hdj)<\/p>",
