Forest Fires Continue to Rage Across 7 Mountains in East Java<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven mountains in East Java have not escaped the\nrage of forest fires during this year\u2019s ongoing dry season. They are\nMount Bromo, Mount Semeru, Mount Raung, Mount Ijen, Mount Argopuro,\nMount Butak, and Mount Lemongan.<\/p>\n
Information obtained by Tempo indicates that another fire broke out\nin the Bromo area late Thursday, September 10, 2026. This time, the fire\nwas located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in Ngadisari\nVillage, Probolinggo. \u201cWaterbombing helicopters have been deployed for\naerial operations to combat the forest fires in the Bromo area,\u201d said\nIsnugroho, Head of the Lumajang Regency Regional Disaster Management\nAgency (BPBD), on Friday, September 11, 2026.<\/p>\n
According to Isnugroho, a fire also broke out on Mount Lemongan in\nLumajang that same evening, burning approximately five hectares of land\nbefore being extinguished. \u201cThis morning, we rechecked to ensure there\nwere no hotspots or smoldering stumps,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mount Butak, located on the border between Batu City and Blitar\nRegency, also caught fire. The Head of the East Java Regional Division\nof Perum Perhutani, Dewanto, monitored firefighting efforts on the\nmountain on Sunday, September 6, 2026.<\/p>\n
The Head of the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Nur\nPatria Kurniawan, said the Yang Highlands wildlife sanctuary, also under\nthe supervision of the Argopuro Mountains, and the Ijen Crater Nature\nReserve, both under the supervision of the BBKSDA, also reported several\nhotspots, especially in Ijen.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the forest fires on the eastern side of the Cikasur area,\nMount Argopuro, are close to the borders of four regencies: Situbondo,\nBondowoso, Probolinggo, and Jember. Information from the East Java\nRegional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) states that approximately\nseven hectares of land were affected and the data collection process is\nstill ongoing.<\/p>\n
Nur could not yet confirm the cause of the fire, although officers\nfound several animal snares before entering the area, as well as the\ntrace of a campfire. \u201cWe will analyze it after it\u2019s all extinguished,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Eny Handayani, Deputy Administrator of the Bondowoso\nForest Management Unit (KPH), Perum Perhutani, confirmed the fire on\nMount Raung, which is located on the border between Jember, Banyuwangi,\nand Bondowoso Regencies. \u201cThe fire is at an altitude of 2,000 meters\nabove sea level,\u201d Eny told Tempo on Thursday, September 10, 2026.<\/p>\n
The Geological Agency had previously issued a report on the fire on\nMount Raung to clarify the presence of white smoke on the slopes of the\nvolcano, which was linked to volcanic activity. This report was later\ncorrected, stating that the smoke originated from wildfires.<\/p>\n
Eny stated that it is difficult to find the perpetrators and evidence\nin every forest and land fire case. \u201cBut the cause is definitely human\nnegligence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gatot Kuswinaryono, Assistant to Perhutani and Head of the Klakah\nForest Management Unit (BKPH) of the Probolinggo Perum Perhutani Forest\nManagement Unit (KPH), also confirmed that the fire in Lemongan was\nsuspected to be human-caused. \u201cIt originated outside the forest area,\u201d\nGatot said on Friday morning.<\/p>\n
