        "content": "<p>Foreigners nabbed for breaching laws<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Immigration officers in greater Jakarta area<br>\ncaptured at least 178 foreigners for violation of Law No. 9\/1992<br>\non Immigration and involvement in drug cases, an official said on<br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We nabbed the foreigners during a routine operation in<br>\nJanuary,\" Director General of Immigration M. Mudakir said in a<br>\nstatement, copies of which were made available to the press on<br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Tangerang immigration office caught two foreigners while<br>\nthe Soekarno-Hatta Airport office netted 130 foreigners, he said.<br>\nIn Bogor, he added, the office caught three foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>\"We also caught 30 foreigners in Central Jakarta, three in<br>\nSouth Jakarta, and one in East Jakarta,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mudakir said the operations, held in Palmerah subdistrict,<br>\nWest Jakarta, concentrated on apprehending Africans. Other<br>\noperations in Pulogadung, Cibubur, Jatinegara in East Jakarta,<br>\nJl. Jaksa, Kemayoran area, and Pasar Baru area in Central<br>\nJakarta, in Bekasi, east of Jakarta, in Tangerang, west of<br>\nJakarta and in Bogor, south of Jakarta, targeted other<br>\nnationalities.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the captured foreigners included American,<br>\nAngolan, Australian, British, Chinese, Egyptian, Filipino,<br>\nIndian, Japanese, Jordanian, Malaysian, and Malian.<\/p>\n<p>\"We also detained Nigerian, Pakistani, Saudi Arabian,<br>\nSingaporean, South Korean, Sri Lankan, Sudanese, Swiss national,<br>\nTaiwanese, Tanzanian, and Togolese,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The violations included fake visas, overstaying, fictitious<br>\nsponsors, stay permit violations, drug possession, and incomplete<br>\ntravel documents,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Supervision of foreigners entering the country has been<br>\nintensified following numerous cases of foreigners' involved in<br>\ndrug cases and violations of the immigration laws, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He denied the allegations that the immigration directorate-<br>\ngeneral had been inactive in monitoring incoming foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>\"There were 596 foreigners with various nationalities caught<br>\nand deported for breaching the immigration laws in 1999,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>There were also 193 foreigners quarantined in Kalideres, West<br>\nJakarta as of last December, he added, saying there were at least<br>\n230 foreigners quarantined nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Mudakir also revealed that the Spanish government had given a<br>\nsoft loan of US$ 35 million to finance the establishment of<br>\ndigitally-transmitted Immigration Management and Information<br>\nSystem (SIMKIM).<\/p>\n<p>\"The new system will enable us to have on-line network with<br>\nall immigration offices nationwide and with all Indonesian<br>\nembassies,\" he said, adding that the deal was signed last<br>\nDecember.<\/p>\n<p>\"Currently, we still use manual data processing which delays<br>\nretrieval of data on incoming foreigners,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that his office had established cooperation with other<br>\ngovernment institutions to monitor visiting foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>\"The team includes the Ministries of Manpower and Tourism,<br>\nregional administrations, the police, the attorney general's<br>\noffice, and immigration,\" he said, while citing that immigration<br>\nacted as the coordinator while each member enforces its own<br>\njurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>Mudakir called on city residents to report to the immigration<br>\noffices if they suspected foreigners violating immigration<br>\nregulations in their respective neighborhood.
