        "content": "<p>Foreigners denied entry to Papua<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>To avert the possibility of foreign intervention, the government<br>\nannounced on Thursday it would deny entry to a delegation from a<br>\nUnited States-based non-governmental organization to Papua.<\/p>\n<p>The Papuan Presidium Council (PDP) has invited the American<br>\nactivists grouped under the Council of Foreign Relations as<br>\nobservers in the strife-torn province between Dec. 13 and Dec.<br>\n16.<\/p>\n<p>\"We do not see the urgency for such an organization to enter<br>\nPapua. What for?,\" Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda<br>\nsaid on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry has only received information regarding the plan,<br>\nbut not a formal request from the NGO.<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Pacific fleet commander Dennis Blair will<br>\nreportedly head the delegation.<\/p>\n<p>\"They have not notified us of their plan, but, I stress that,<br>\nonce again, there is no need for them to come to Papua,\" the<br>\nminister said.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan said that the organization was planning to assess the<br>\nconflict situation in the province, but their purpose was<br>\nunclear.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa said that the<br>\nIndonesian embassy in Washington had implicitly told the NGO that<br>\nJakarta would not let them enter Papua.<\/p>\n<p>\"They are not representing the U.S. government and our embassy<br>\nin Washington has indicated that the NGO would be rejected should<br>\nthey try to enter Papua,\" Marty said.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign intervention in Papua has been one of the worrying<br>\nfactors for the government in maintaining the province as part of<br>\nthe republic.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Gen.<br>\nEndriartono Sutarto expressed his anger over foreign parties with<br>\nvested interests that use diplomatic channels to support the<br>\nseparatist movement in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am not optimistic that we can solve separatist problems in<br>\nPapua ... It's because this province has more potential (to be<br>\nindependent) and is being supported by various foreign<br>\ninterests,\" Endriartono said.<\/p>",
