        "content": "<p>Foreign ships warned<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Director General of Sea Transportation Soentoro<br>\nhas said he will take legal action against foreign shipping<br>\ncompanies and their agents which transport cargo or pick up empty<br>\ncontainers at undesignated domestic ports.<\/p>\n<p>Soentoro said he would not hesitate to revoke the shipping<br>\npermits of domestic firms which acted as the agents of foreign<br>\nvessels, if they violated this ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Under government regulations, foreign vessels are not allowed<br>\nto transport cargo or empty containers between domestic ports<br>\nwhere they are only scheduled to unload or berth.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The rules may seem very strict, but actually it is quite<br>\ncommon because most international shipping rules apply this<br>\nprinciple of cabotage,&quot; Soentoro said, reported Bisnis Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>He said that by complying with the regulations, cargo and<br>\nempty container traffic would flow smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>He expected this would also help to increase the amount of<br>\ndomestic cargo transported by Indonesian fleets to about 70<br>\npercent in the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, about 84.3 million tons, or 54.5 percent of<br>\ndomestic cargo is carried by Indonesian vessels and the remaining<br>\n70.3 million tons, or 45.5 percent, is transported by foreign<br>\nvessels.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have asked provincial and local staffer of the ministry and<br>\nthose working at ports to keep a close watch on the activities of<br>\nforeign ships,&quot; he said.
