        "content": "<p>Foreign poll observers welcomed<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The National Commission on Human Rights welcomed<br>\non Saturday the presence of foreign observers in the first post-<br>\nSoeharto elections scheduled for June, saying they would help<br>\nspeed up the democratization process in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\"Their presence could help develop understanding on standards<br>\nthat should be achieved in the elections,\" chairman of the rights<br>\nbody, Marzuki Darusman, was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Some 48 political parties, including one banned under the<br>\nSoeharto government -- the Democratic People's Party (PRD) --<br>\nwere on Thursday deemed eligible to take part in the polls.<\/p>\n<p>United States Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, who<br>\ncompleted a two-day visit to Jakarta on Friday, has said that she<br>\nbelieved President B.J. Habibie was committed to holding a free<br>\nand fair general election after his taking office when veteran<br>\npresident Soeharto stepped down amid widespread unrest last May.<\/p>\n<p>Habibie had even inquired whether former U.S. president Jimmy<br>\nCarter, who has led election monitoring teams in several<br>\ncountries, might come to observe the June 7 polls, Albright said.<\/p>\n<p>Albright expressed hope that the government and poll officials<br>\nwould do their best to prevent the elections and the electoral<br>\ncampaign from becoming violent or degenerating into vote-<br>\nbuying.
