In response to the letter sent by Robert P. titled Foreign
\nMinistry trapped in coordination meeting, ing (Kompas, December 18), we I
\nI consider it necessary to explain that information coordination
\nmeetings are one of the ministry's routine activities related to
\nthe working territories of the representative offices of the
\nRepublic of Indonesia. The purpose is to provide the information
\nofficials with matters related to public relations, first-hand
\ninformation about the latest developments in Indonesia and
\ntechniques on how to communicate with the media.<\/p>\n
The meeting heard lectures from relevant officials and experts
\nin their fields, including a simulation by a Beijing-based senior
\njournalist of a foreign media publication.<\/p>\n
The meeting also drew up an action plan and this had to be
\ncarried out by the representative offices with consideration
\nbeing given to the reality and capability conforming to the
\ncondition of the representative offices concerned. The funds for
\nthe meeting did not come from a special project, but from the
\nrepresentative offices concerned. Even speakers not from the
\nforeign ministry paid for their own trip to Beijing.<\/p>\n
Concerning the benefit of Internet, it should be noted that
\nnot all that an information officer needs can be obtained from
\nthe Internet because, in an effort to improve the quality of
\nhuman resources, a coordination meeting places the stress on
\nactive interaction between the participants and resource persons.
\nSo the information coordination meeting was one of the means to
\nachieve this goal. Of course, time, energy and money were needed.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry fully appreciates the public demand that
\nmore attention should be given to the protection of Indonesian
\ncitizens faced with one problem or another abroad. Therefore, in
\nthe new structure of the foreign ministry, a new directorate has
\nbeen set up. This is the directorate for the protection of
\nIndonesian citizens and Indonesian statutory bodies.<\/p>\n
The establishment of this directorate requires a larger budget
\nfor the ministry.<\/p>\n
