Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the United States failed\nto force Tehran to surrender during the war. The US has even been said\nto have begged Iran to negotiate.<\/p>\n
\u201cAmerica is now begging to negotiate with us according to our terms,\u201d\nAraghchi said in a statement carried by Al Jazeera on Tuesday\n(18\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
He claimed that the memorandum of understanding signed with\nWashington contains 13 provisions that benefit Tehran. \u201cOnly one\nbenefits them,\u201d he said, while accusing Israel of trying to sabotage its\nimplementation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe won the war, and we also won in diplomacy, and we forced the\nenemy to accept our terms,\u201d Araghchi said.<\/p>\n
He added that Iran\u2019s military capabilities and battlefield\nperformance strengthened the negotiating position of Tehran\u2019s\ndiplomats.<\/p>\n
Open conflict between the United States and Iran on a large military\nscale began on 28 February 2026. The US and Israel launched massive air\nstrikes against Iranian military and nuclear sites. Tehran retaliated by\nlaunching attacks on Israel and US-allied countries in the Middle East.\nNegotiation efforts following the ceasefire agreement have yet to\nproduce results.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the United States is\nnot engaged in talks with Iran\u2014and has not scheduled any talks\u2014while at\nthe same time insisting that the Strait of Hormuz remains open.<\/p>\n
The US leader stressed that although the naval blockade of Iranian\nports remains \u2018fully in effect\u2019, all other maritime traffic is free to\npass. He also posted a map depicting the strategic waterway as US\nterritory.<\/p>\n
The comments mark the latest shift in stance from Trump. On Monday,\nhe had claimed that the US was engaged in talks through unofficial\nchannels with Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Tehran\nquickly denied the claim.<\/p>\n
Tuesday\u2019s statement appeared to reflect Trump\u2019s frustration, given\nthat Iran and Oman\u2014the countries bordering Hormuz\u2014continue to hold talks\non the management of the strait.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are no talks or conversations ongoing, nor scheduled, with the\nIslamic Republic of Iran. The Naval Blockade remains fully in effect.\nThe Strait of Hormuz is open and operational. All sea mines have been\nremoved or detonated,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n
Iran reiterated that Hormuz will remain closed until Washington\nfulfils the terms of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by\nboth parties in June. The MoU was drawn up to end the hostilities that\nbegan in March.<\/p>\n
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister for legal and\ninternational affairs, appeared to respond to Trump\u2019s post.<\/p>\n
