Foreign lawyers questioned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Da'i
\nBachtiar said yesterday that officers had questioned several
\nforeign lawyers over alleged unauthorized practices here.<\/p>\n
But he declined to disclose the exact number of foreign
\nlawyers, or the regulations or laws the lawyers had allegedly
\nviolated.<\/p>\n
\"The case is still under investigation. We're still examining
\nsome related regulations and laws to see whether these lawyers
\nhave really committed violations.\"<\/p>\n
Da'i, who also declined to name the lawyers, said all
\nforeigners intending to work in Indonesia must first obtain
\nofficial work permits from the related government institutions,
\nsuch as the Ministry of Manpower and the Directorate General of
\nImmigration.<\/p>\n
None of the foreign lawyers were detained.<\/p>\n
Foreigners must have valid passports and working visas to be
\nable to work here, he said, adding that the lawyers had
\nreportedly offered their services to local parties.<\/p>\n
Da'i said his office was also investigating the parties that
\nused the legal services offered by the foreigners.<\/p>\n
\"That will not be easy because they will not spontaneously and
\ngladly tell us that they hired foreign lawyers.\"<\/p>\n
Da'i said his office had also taken statements from some of
\nthe 14 Indonesian lawyers who reported their foreign
\ncounterparts' activities.<\/p>\n
Some local lawyers, including Amir Syamsuddin, Mulya Lubis,
\nand Kartini Mulyadi, had named and reported to police the alleged
\nactivities of about eight foreign lawyers in Jakarta. (cst)<\/p>",
