        "content": "<p>Foreign language study on the decline in city schools<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): More than 100 qualified German language teachers<br>\nin Jakarta's senior high schools are teaching everything but<br>\nGerman, an officer of the city's education and culture office<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Henny Liestiana of the city's office, who chaired a conference<br>\non German language teaching yesterday, said the teachers were now<br>\nteaching subjects like sociology and history even though they may<br>\nnot have mastered them.<\/p>\n<p>She said the cause of the problem was that since the<br>\nintroduction of the 1994 education curriculum there have not<br>\nenough students willing to take a second foreign language at<br>\nschool.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new curriculum, students in social science<br>\ndepartments no longer have to take a second foreign language.<\/p>\n<p>The only students required to take a second foreign language<br>\nare those in language departments, she said.<\/p>\n<p>And the ministry requires that at least 12 students must<br>\nindicate they want to study languages before a school can set up<br>\na language department.<\/p>\n<p>Henny said that it was difficult to get these numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\"Most students are not interested in languages,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>Many people wrongly assumed that there was no future for<br>\nstudents who chose languages, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\"In fact, mastering other languages is essential in the global<br>\nera.\"<\/p>\n<p>Henny said that of 527 senior high schools in Jakarta only 50<br>\nhad a language department.<\/p>\n<p>Henny was speaking yesterday at a press conference on \"German<br>\nLanguage in the Global Era\" put on by the Goethe Institute<br>\nJakarta in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the institute's language teaching section, Henning<br>\nSchroedter-Albers, said Indonesia had about 200 German<br>\nentrepreneurs, factories, institutions, all needing employees who<br>\nspeak German.<\/p>\n<p>Schroedter-Albers said that to promote interest in the<br>\nlanguage, the institute had awarded scholarships to senior high<br>\nschool teachers, had trained German language lecturers from 10<br>\nteacher training institutes throughout the country, and run short<br>\ncourses in three universities.<\/p>\n<p>It also provided student scholarships, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In 1997, 80 Indonesian postgraduate students are studying in<br>\nGermany through the German Academic Exchange Service.
