Foreign investments in small businesses<\/p>\n
Discussions were held on Monday between the Minister of
\nCooperatives and Small Enterprises, Subiakto Tjakrawerdaja, and
\nthe State Minister of Investment\/Chairman of Investment
\nCoordinating Board, Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo. The subject of the
\ndiscussions was a draft joint decision regarding foreign
\ninvestment in small businesses.<\/p>\n
After the meeting Minister Subiakto announced that the
\ngovernment was planning to open up foreign investment
\nopportunities as widely as possible, which would include small
\nbusinesses. In other words the government will abandon its policy
\nof keeping \"business sanctuaries\" in order for Indonesia to draw
\na maximum benefit from the industries relocating from other
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
We know how important the roles and functions of small
\nbusinesses are in the context of our country's social and
\neconomic make-up. Small businesses are not merely economic
\nentities. We often say that small businesses provide a safety
\nvalve to protect us from the possible social (and economic)
\nproblems that could erupt.<\/p>\n
The creation of proper legislation to protect small businesses
\nhas not yet become reality. Now that a new idea has been offered
\n-- which is, to open up the small business sector to foreign
\ninvestments -- it is therefore quite understandable that the
\nfollowing question arise: Will the presence of foreign capital
\nnot worsen the burden that our national small business people
\nmust bear?<\/p>\n
