Foreign firms enter Biak<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A consortium of Malaysian and German companies
\nwill develop rice, sago and oil palm plantations on a one million
\nhectare plot in the Integrated Economic Development Zone (Kapet)
\nof Biak, Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
Chief executive of Kapet's management board, Frans de Wanna,
\nsaid on Tuesday the consortium, PT Dato Enterprise, was among
\neight new investors to open business in the Kapet area.<\/p>\n
He said 10 other national and multinational companies with
\npast experience of investment in other parts of the province also
\nobtained licenses to operate in the Kapet area.<\/p>\n
\"The eight new investors will start their projects after the
\nJune elections.\"<\/p>\n
He said the board was currently evaluating proposals from
\nseven prospective investors interested in the Kapet area.<\/p>\n
Kapet Biak, established by former president Soeharto in
\nJanuary last year, covers the five districts of Biak-Numfor,
\nYapen Waropen, Manokwari, Nabire and Mimika.<\/p>\n
Frans said the Malaysian-German consortium would open its
\nplantation in Nabire.<\/p>\n
An American joint venture is ready to open a huge fish
\nfreezing factory in Biak, he added, and a subsidiary of the local
\nDjajanti Group was licensed to expand its Biak fish cannery worth
