The sluggish national film business has been a great concern
\nto the Indonesian people in general and the film makers and film
\ndistributors in particular. The situation will remains so as long
\nas Indonesia is free to import Western films. A question now
\narises: Are we serious in handling the national films so that
\nthey become the host in their own country?<\/p>\n
In my opinion, the national films have difficulty competing
\nwith Western films because of the following reasons:<\/p>\n
* Almost every Western film is managed by film professionals,
\nquality human resources. While our film makers still lack such
\nexpertise.<\/p>\n
* Western films are produced with the support of sophisticated
\nequipment and technology as evident in the lighting and sounding
\nsystems, make-up and other minor aspects.<\/p>\n
One of the constraints to achieve this stage is the
\navailability of enough funds. Or perhaps the conglomerates may
\nhelp to provide the funds needed.<\/p>\n
There is still one important thing which calls for serious
\nattention of the film makers, i.e. the theme of the film. Western
\nfilms allow free creativity and every creation is duly
\nappreciated.<\/p>\n
The last question may be: Is it necessary to limit the import
\nof Western films, at for the time being?<\/p>\n
