Foreign election observers<\/p>\n
An honest and fair general election is one of the instruments
\nthat can save Indonesia. And since the presence of independent
\nobservers is needed to ensure that this goal is achieved, Japan,
\nthe United States, Britain, France, the Netherlands and Belgium
\nare feeling called upon to offer their help.<\/p>\n
The government should regard such foreign involvement in the
\ngeneral election procedures as a token of their willingness to
\nhelp Indonesia accelerate its democratization process. If the
\nupcoming general election does, indeed, proceed honestly and
\nfairly, and the fact is recognized by those countries'
\ngovernments, then the international legitimacy of the new
\nIndonesian government that is to be formed will be assured.<\/p>\n
On the international forum, Indonesia would then no longer be
\naccused of being antidemocratic. Another advantage would be that
\nour own independent observers would have partners to work with.
\nAll this would make the upcoming 1999 general election accepted
\nby all and that would greatly help to accelerate the process of
\nbuilding a sound and mature democracy.<\/p>\n
