Since rumors are rife that foreign doctors will be allowed to
\npractice in Indonesia following the \"free market scheme for
\nhealth services,\" I am anxious about the fate of local doctors.
\nHowever, my worries would be alleviated if the foreign doctors
\nwere to practice under the same conditions as their Indonesian
\ncounterparts.<\/p>\n
It should be noted that Indonesian doctors, without exception,
\nare obliged to undergo wajib kerja sarjana or compulsory postings
\nfor university graduates. Even a specialist cannot be exempted
\nfrom this prerequisite. Will foreign doctors be subject to this
\nscheme? If not, it is not fair.<\/p>\n
In a report entitled The way the foreign hospital recruits its
\nstaff is questionable (Kompas, Feb. 14, 1995) there is
\ndiscrimination in the recruitment of medical staff. Indonesian
\ndoctors who will deal with Indonesian patients must take an
\nEnglish test, whereas the foreign doctors (who speak very little
\nIndonesian) can be accepted without taking a test in bahasa
\nIndonesia. The report also poses the question: Why is it that
\nIndonesian doctors are paid less than foreign doctors?<\/p>\n
Why this discrimination? Is it because \"free market\" can be
\ninterpreted as being the same as globalization or liberalization?<\/p>\n
I hope the authorities will take necessary measures against
\nsuch potential discrimination.<\/p>\n
