Ford to enter India<\/p>\n
BOMBAY (AFP): Indian jeep maker Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd.,
\nyesterday announced that its tie-up with US auto giant Ford Motor
\nCo. would begin commercial production of passenger cars in India
\nin May next year.<\/p>\n
\"It is expected that the initial manufacturing operations are
\nlikely to commence in May 1996,\" company chairman Keshub Mahindra
\ntold shareholders at the 49th annual general meeting here.<\/p>\n
Mahindra said the joint venture, which is yet to receive
\nformal approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board and
\nother authorities, planned to begin production of two passenger
\ncar models -- the Escort and the Fiesta.<\/p>\n
The initial capacity would be 100,000 cars every year, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"The estimated range of the project cost is in the
\nneighborhood of a little over 20 billion rupees (US$625
\nmillion),\" Mahindra said.<\/p>",
