National Pledge for achieving EFA and MDGs goals in Indonesia<\/p>\n
Indonesia is expected to achieve Education for All (EFA) and
\nMillennium Development Goals (MDGs) objectives following the
\nsigning the National Pledge Event.<\/p>\n
Organized by the Centre for Betterment of Education (CBE) with
\nthe support of UNESCO, Jakarta, the National Pledge was signed by
\nat least 30 representatives from various different parties in
\nJakarta on Nov. 24, 2005.<\/p>\n
The signatories included representatives from the Ministry of
\nNational Education, international agencies, non-governmental
\norganizations (NGOs), teachers and elementary students.<\/p>\n
The signing ceremony was opened by Hasnah Gagim,
\nrepresentative of the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO,
\nand Riswan Lapagu, director of CBE. The event was closed by
\nAlisher Umarov, Education Officer of UNESCO Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The signing of the National Pledge Event has demonstrated
\nstrong public commitment to looking over the implementation of
\nthe EFA goals especially No. 2 and 5, which are to ensure that by
\nthe year 2015 all people, young and old, can achieve primary
\neducation level, and MDGs goals, especially No. 2 and 3, which
\naim to achieve gender-equal education by the year 2015 in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Under the National Pledge Event, the signatories agreed among
\nother things to accelerate the attainment of EFA and MDGs goals,
\nsynchronize and coordinate their efforts on behalf of EFA
\nattainment, while at the same time respecting the specific
\ncompetencies and capacities of all participating agencies.<\/p>\n
They also pledged to implement integrated strategies for
\ngender equality in education that recognize the need for changes
\nin attitudes, values and practices and participate in monitoring
\nthe progress toward EFA goals, strategies and the national
\neducational program in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Established in 2000, CBE is an NGO with focus on education for
\nelementary and junior high school level.<\/p>\n
Since 2003, CBE, the national partner of the Worldwide Global
\nCampaign supported by UNESCO, has been active in promoting EFA
\nand MDGs in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"Education to End Poverty\" is this year's EFA and MDGs
\ncampaign theme. And in parallel with the theme, CBE has been
\nengaged in a series of activities since April of this year, with
\nthe signing of the National Pledge Event as the peak of the
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
In line with EFA and MDGs goals, CBE has focused its
\nactivities on organizing group discussions with education
\nstakeholders; inviting politicians and influential figures to
\nvisit schools and communities through \"Go Back to School\"
\nactivities and asking school children to write about their
\nfriends who are not in school for different reasons. CBE also
\ndistributes solidarity card \"cut-out friends' that were also
\nsigned by the Pledge participants as their solidarity symbol for
\nilliterate young children.<\/p>\n
To help achieve the goal, CBE prepares and distributes EFA &
\nMDGs campaign materials, such as posters, leaflets, brochures,
\nand banners to the schools and communities in different provinces
\nof Indonesia, including Aceh.<\/p>\n
CBE has identified at least 300 elementary school drop-outs
\nfrom 13 schools in Jakarta, Bogor and Depok.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is one of the countries that signed the Dakar
\nFramework for Action in 2000. Under the framework, Indonesia
\nalong with other world leaders are committed to continuing to
\nsupport the efforts of developing countries in the implementation
\nof the Education for All Initiative, including with enhanced
\nresources of all types in support of country-led national
\neducational plans.<\/p>\n
However, millions of young children remain illiterate, with
\nthe gender-gap in basic and secondary education remaining wide.<\/p>\n
No doubt, the National Pledge Event is important given its
\nrole in establishing solidarity networks between the government
\nand other stakeholders in order to achieve the EFA and MDGs
\ngoals.<\/p>",
