Food poisoning claims 101 victims<\/p>\n

Health centers and a hospital in Samigaluh district,
\nKulonprogo regency, admitted 101 people from Wednesday to
\nThursday for suspected food poisoning, all of whom had attended a
\nwedding reception in Banjarsari subdistrict here.<\/p>\n
As of Friday afternoon, 50 people were still receiving
\ntreatment at a local hospital for food poisoning; the other 51
\nresidents had already been discharged.<\/p>\n
The incident began on Wednesday when dozens of Banjarsari
\nresidents pitched in to help Tukiman, 55, prepare dishes for
\nThursday's reception, which he was hosting.<\/p>\n
Partiyem, one of the helpers, said she and a few others had
\ntasted some of the food they had cooked.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday afternoon, at least eight people felt dizzy and
\nvomited repeatedly just after eating some of the wedding food,
\nand went home to rest and recover.<\/p>\n
Most people, particularly the host, were unaware that the
\neight had suffered from food poisoning, so Tukiman went ahead
\nwith the wedding reception as planned.<\/p>\n
The disaster continued on Thursday when, after the party, the
\nguests went one by one to the Samigaluh community health center
\nfor medical treatment. Most of them were vomiting and suffering
\nfrom dizziness.<\/p>\n
Partiyem said more and more people came to the health center
\nseeking treatment throughout the day, so that it could not
\naccommodate any more patients. The wedding guests thus went to a
\nhospital in Samigaluh district.<\/p>\n
Karti recalled that she still felt well after she had eaten at
\nthe reception at noon on Thursday, but that afternoon, she began
\nfeeling dizzy and vomiting, and had to go to the toilet
\nrepeatedly.<\/p>\n
\"I was scared, so I went to the community health center, where
\nI was then told by a staffer that I had to go to Bhakti Husodo
\nHospital for medical treatment,\" she said. Due to limited space,
\nhowever, some residents had to rest on the floor.<\/p>\n
Health development head Bambang Haryatno at the Kulonprogo
\nHealth Office said the hospital had used 600 intravenous feeding
\nbottles for the ill-fated wedding guests.<\/p>\n
\"We have obtained samples of the food and are running tests in
\nour laboratory to determine whether the food was the cause of the
\nincident,\" he said on Friday.<\/p>",
