        "content": "<p>Folklore competition<\/p>\n<p>As an American with more than a passing interest in the<br>\nEnglish language folklore, I took special note of your report on<br>\nJuly 2, 1999, on the folklore competition in Bogor.<\/p>\n<p>I was saddened and angered to read that the winners had been<br>\ndenied their rewards. What lesson are these young men and women<br>\nof Indonesia to learn from this?<\/p>\n<p>(a) We are not to trust our compatriot elders, leaders, and<br>\nsponsors to honor their commitments;<\/p>\n<p>(b) When we finish our education and assume positions of<br>\nresponsibility we are not to be concerned if we fail to perform<br>\nour duties diligently and honorably -- there is no penalty.<\/p>\n<p>On the face of it, the organizers of this national competition<br>\nhave committed a fraud, and should be condemned for it.<\/p>\n<p>MICHAEL MCLANE<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
