Flushing work affects water service<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Poor tap water service will continue to affect
\ncustomers in certain parts of the city over the next one to two
\nyears due to a pipeline flushing project, an executive at a tap
\nwater company said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
John Hurcom, president of PT Thames Pam Jaya (TPJ), a partner
\nof city-owned water company PDAM Jaya, said that during the
\nrepair work customers' tap water would be discolored because of
\nsediment from the flushed pipes.<\/p>\n
\"The flushing work is needed in areas where pipelines are
\nfilled with sediment. It is difficult to predict when and which
\nareas will be flushed because there are so many bad pipes,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also said that the discoloration might also be caused by
\nwater contamination from leakage in the pipes or seepage from
\ngroundwater.<\/p>\n
Hurcom expected improvement in the tap water service after the
\ninstallation of new pipelines, which is predicted to be completed
\nin one to two years.<\/p>\n
Nani Sariati, sales and marketing manager for TPJ, which is
\nresponsible for supplying water to eastern Jakarta, said that the
\nflushing would be conducted in areas where old pipeline networks
\nhad not been replaced.<\/p>\n
As earlier reported, several city residents living in the
\nareas supplied by TPJ and Pam Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja), a PDAM
\nJaya partner which supplies water to western Jakarta, complained
\nabout tap water discoloration.<\/p>\n
Corry, a university student living in the Cawang area of East
\nJakarta, complained that she was forced to buy drinking water
\nbecause she was afraid of drinking the brownish tap water.<\/p>\n
\"It cost me more money, but it's better than being sick,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sondang, a resident of Jatinegara, East Jakarta, had the same
\nexperience. \"Our tap water is discolored sometimes, but not every
\nday. It's quite annoying because my mother is even afraid of
\nusing the water to wash white dresses.\"<\/p>\n
Tap water in certain areas of Central Jakarta, which is
\nsupplied by Palyja, is also problematic. Heniawati, who lives in
\nthe Menteng area of Central Jakarta, said that she was also
\nforced to buy drinking water.<\/p>\n
\"This is the first time the tap water has been discolored
\nsince I've lived here, which has been about two years,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Nani explained that TPJ had thus far replaced old pipelines in
\nKelapa Gading and Sindang in North Jakarta, and Klender in East
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We have established a team which specializes in searching for
\npipeline leakages and repairing the leaks. Up until now we have
\nrepaired 200 kilometers of pipelines out of the 4,100 km network
\nunder TPJ's authority,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The company has found and repaired more than 20,000 leaks
\nsince the start of its operation last year, she said. (ind)<\/p>",
