Flowers survive amid thrash<\/p>\n

The beauty of Bulltongue Arrowhead (Sagittaria Lancifolia), a
\nperennial herb with lance-shaped leaves and white flowers with
\nthree petals, which is commonly found in Florida and Puerto Rico,
\nhas attracted many visitors to the Bogor Botanical Gardens.<\/p>\n
But, many visitors who come to see the flower throw plastic
\nbottles into a nearby pond.<\/p>\n
The poor condition of the Sagittaria pond -- one of five ponds
\nin the vicinity of the gardens on Jl. Putri Astrid, has prompted
\nthe gardens management to clean up the area.<\/p>\n
Wawan, an employee of the gardens' collection division, said
\nthat besides cleaning up the pond, workers had also changed its
\nwater source.<\/p>\n
\"We used to fill the pond using water from Ciliwung River. But
\nnow, we will pump the water from Katulampa dam's irrigation
\nchannel,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that Ciliwung River had been polluted by
\nhousehold waste and rubbish from traditional markets.<\/p>\n
In 2002, the gardens management and the then Ministry of
\nSettlement and Regional Infrastructure built an eight-kilometer
\nirrigation channel from Katulampa dam. The waterway was intended
\nto meet the need to water collectible plants, particularly
\norchids.<\/p>",
