Flour makers should get SNIs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Industry and Trade will require
\nall flour producers to obtain Indonesian National Standard (SNI)
\nquality certificates in order to protect consumers, the
\nministry's senior official said here on Friday.<\/p>\n
Teddy Setiadi, the director general of domestic trade, said
\nthat his office was still waiting for an approval from the
\nNational Standardization Board (BSN) to impose the quality
\nstandard requirement.<\/p>\n
\"Obtaining the INS certificates is now on a voluntary basis,
\nbut it will become obligatory when the BSN gives its approval,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
A large amount of low-quality flour, especially that mixed
\nfrom different kinds of wheat products, has been sold in the
\nmarket, he said, adding the imposition of the tight quality
\nstandard requirement would help protect the consumers.<\/p>\n
Domestic flour production reached 4.45 million tons last year.
\nThe country's major wheat millers like PT Bogasari, PT Sriboga
\nand PT Berdikari imported their raw material from Australia,
\nCanada and the United States.<\/p>\n
In 1998 total wheat imports dropped slightly to 3.4 million
\ntons from 3.6 million tons. (06)<\/p>",
