Floodwaters subside in Aceh<\/p>\n

Floodwaters began to subside in South Aceh and Southwest Aceh
\nregencies on Saturday after heavy rains and overflowing rivers,
\nbeginning on Wednesday, inundated the two regencies.<\/p>\n
The water, which reached 1.5 meters in some areas in the two
\nregencies began dropping late on Friday, allowing some residents
\nto return to their houses, while key transportation routes to
\nMedan were largely back to normal.<\/p>\n
The flood, which affected thousands of houses, took place
\nafter heavy rains began on Wednesday causing rivers to overflow.<\/p>\n
Serambi Indonesia newspaper journalist Sufrizal Yusuf said
\nSouth Aceh Regent Muchsalmina and several officials had visited
\nKota Fajar while deputy regent Harfana Hasan went to Meukek
\ndistrict, which was affected the most.<\/p>\n
The overflowing of the Meukek river also damaged a concrete
\ndam in Kuta Buluh II village, allowing floodwaters to rise into
\nmany houses in Blang Kuala and Arun Tunggai villages. The
\nflooding also damaged three bridges in nearby villages, cutting
\ntransportation from the district capital to several villages and
\nforcing residents to use rafts to get through.<\/p>\n
Flooding was also reported in six other districts of Southwest
\nAceh regency, with thousands of houses inundated by muddy water.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of tsunami survivors, who live in Susoh district and
\nin Keude Manggeng village in the regency, were also affected by
\nthe flood as the water had inundated their makeshift tents,
\nforcing most to seek higher ground.<\/p>\n
Sufrizal said that the floodwater had started to subside,
\nalthough several areas, like Pulau Kayu village, Blangpidie
\nregency, were still under about 30 centimeters of water.<\/p>\n
The flood was the latest in a series of natural disasters over
\nthe past year in Aceh province. Another recent flood, in
\nSoutheast Aceh regency, killed 28 people and destroyed some 900
\nhouses last month.<\/p>",
