Floods, landslides hit Southern Java, South Bandung<\/p>\n

One person was killed and hundreds of homes in the southern
\nCentral Java regencies of Banjarnegara and Kebumen were inundated
\nas a result of the heavy rain that fell over the past few days.<\/p>\n
In Banjarnegara, the heavy rain caused a landslide in
\nSemangkung village, Pejawaran district, which claimed the life of
\nMurwanto, a 60-years-old woman living in the village.<\/p>\n
She was buried in her house by the natural disaster on Friday
\nnight. The landslide in Semangkung also destroyed a building
\nbelonging to a local consumer finance company, but no fatalities
\nwere reported in the incident.<\/p>\n
A landslide also occurred in the neighboring regency of
\nKebumen on Friday. This time, the landslide destroyed the home of
\nthe Suwandari family, who live in Pekuran village. No fatalities
\nwere reported.<\/p>\n
Following the incident, Kebumen deputy regent Hadi Supeno
\nordered on Saturday all subdistrict and district officials in the
\nregency to be on the alert for further landslides in the regency.
\n"Landslides can happen suddenly, so they must tell the residents
\nto remain vigilant," he said.<\/p>\n
He added that Kebumen administration had allocated Rp 8
\nbillion (US$1 million) this year to both prevent natural
\ndisasters and compensate victims.<\/p>\n
Also on Saturday, floodwaters inundated dozens of homes in the
\nneighboring Buayan district in Kebumen regency. No fatalities
\nwere reported, but residents were forced to take refuge with
\nrelatives living in neighboring districts.<\/p>\n
Banjarnegara and Kebumen regencies are two areas prone to
\nlandslides. In Kebumen, for example, landslides claimed 15 lives
\nlast year, all residents of Kebumen's Sruweng and Ayah districts.<\/p>\n
Separately, heavy rain also hit the South Bandung area in West
\nJava here on Friday, with more than 300 houses being flooded as a
\nresult.<\/p>\n
The floods forced some 2,300 residents living in two districts
\nin the South Bandung area to take refuge with relatives and in
\npublic buildings such as schools.<\/p>\n
The floods resulted when the Citarum river flowing through the
\nSouth Bandung area burst its banks, said a local government
\nofficial, Suwarna Surya. Cangkuang Wetan subdistrict in
\nDayeuhkolot district was the hardest hit area in South Bandung,
\nwith the floodwater 60 centimeters deep.<\/p>\n
As of Sunday, the flooding has eased and the residents had
\nbegun returning to their homes. However, Suwarna warned the
\nresidents to remain vigilant because the rainy season had not yet
\nended.<\/p>\n
He added that the South Bandung area was prone to flooding due
\nto its low-lying character.<\/p>",
