        "content": "<p>Floods hit Langkat again<\/p>\n<p>Apriadi Gunawan, The Jakarta Post, Medan<\/p>\n<p>Three districts in the regency of Langkat, North Sumatra were<br>\nstill inundated by flooding on Thursday that had initially<br>\nstarted on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Floodwater on the roads was still 10 centimeters deep in<br>\nTanjung Pura, Besitang and Sawit Seberang districts, and an<br>\naverage of 80 centimeters deep in residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>Several government offices were still closed, and human<br>\nactivities had not yet returned to normal.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman for the North Sumatra provincial administration<br>\nSakhyan Asmara said in Medan on Thursday that flooding could hit<br>\nthe regency at any time until December. &quot;Rainfall at the east<br>\ncoast of the province is very high.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Floods first hit Langkat early last month, forcing around<br>\n14,400 families to seek refuge. Many of them have yet to return<br>\nhome, while more than 2,000 flood victims have visited puskesmas<br>\n(community health centers), mostly complaining of diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>Another flood hit the regency on Wednesday, submerging the<br>\nthree districts of Tanjung Puira, Besitang and Sawit Seberang,<br>\nwhere more than 1,000 families live.<\/p>\n<p>The flooding caused a total loss of about Rp 11 billion, local<br>\nofficials said.<\/p>\n<p>According to head of the North Sumatra provincial health<br>\noffice Fatni Sulani, as many as 4,264 people had visited nearby<br>\npuskesmas with diarrhea and skin problems.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Some of them also have stomach complaints.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Chief of the Langkat flood task force Masri Zein said that<br>\n107.32 tons of rice, 1,550 kilograms (kg) of sugar, 1,000 kg of<br>\ncooking oil and 12,450 boxes of instant noodles had been<br>\ncollected from donors.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, floodwater inundating parts of the city of Medan on<br>\nWednesday has subsided.<\/p>\n<p>The situation in Beringin subdistrict in Medan Selayang and<br>\nAur subdistrict in Medan Maimonn returned to normal on Thursday<br>\nafter floodwater had submerged the areas to a depth of one meter<br>\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy downpours had caused the Babura and Deli rivers to burst<br>\ntheir banks on Wednesday.<\/p>",
