Floods destroy paddy fields<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Major floods have destroyed several hundred
\nhectares of ready-for-harvest paddy rice and inundated homes in
\nseveral villages in the Southeast Aceh regency.<\/p>\n
The floods were triggered by incessant rains that have pounded
\nthe area since Tuesday, causing rivers to overflow, local
\nofficial said yesterday.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the regency office of social services,
\nSyahadan, said that in the worst hit villages, flood levels were
\nas high as one meter and, as of yesterday, they showed no sign of
\nreceding.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that although there are no reports of
\ncasualties, the floods are a hard blow to farmers in the regency,
\nwhich is known as Aceh's \"rice barn\".<\/p>\n
The local government is yet to estimate the loss the floods
\nhave inflicted on the residents. (pan)<\/p>",
