Floods dampen ASEAN meeting<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AFP): Heavy rains have flooded the northern Thai city
\nof Chiang Mai on the eve of the Association of South East Asian
\nNations (ASEAN) Economic Ministers meeting (AEM) and sent
\norganizers scrambling for emergency transportation, local reports
\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n
The ancient capital, often called the "Rose of Thailand," was
\nunder a meter of water yesterday, following a week of downpours
\nfrom tropical depression Luke which swept uncollected refuse
\nalong the streets, Thai radio said.<\/p>\n
Some of the worst flooding was near the five-star Westin
\nHotel, where the economic ministers of Brunei, Indonesia,
\nMalaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are to meet
\nMonday for annual talks, The Nation daily said.<\/p>\n
Thai organizers had considered moving the meetings from the
\nWestin to a hotel in a less flooded part of town, but decided
\nFriday that preparations at the Westin were so advanced that the
\nmeetings would be held there.<\/p>",
