        "content": "<p>Floods could hit Kalimantan<\/p>\n<p>SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: Several cities in the province<br>\ncould be vulnerable to severe flooding during the coming rainy<br>\nseason because of the poor condition of water catchments,<br>\nparticularly those located along the Mahakam river, an official<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Illegal logging and forest fires have severely damaged water<br>\ncatchment areas in the Mahakam river basin,\" head of the<br>\nprovincial Environmental Impact Management Agency, Awang Farouk,<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Fires in the early part of this year destroyed at least<br>\n543,000 hectares of forest, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"What is more tragic however is that most of the areas burned<br>\nwere water catchment areas.<\/p>\n<p>\"We predict that some cities in the province, including<br>\nSamarinda, will be heavily flooded when the rains come later this<br>\nyear,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Water quality in the Mahakam river is also deteriorating, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are 25 companies engaged in coal mining, and plywood<br>\nand glue production along the course of the Mahakam.
