Flooding keeps students away from school, kills elderly man<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Major floods hit Riau and Aceh yesterday,
\ndrowning one villager, destroying dozens of houses and forcing
\nhundreds of families to flee their homes.<\/p>\n
In the Riau town of Dumai, the floods affecting six
\nsubdistricts have kept thousands of students from school since
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Dumai regent Zainuddin Abdullah said floods hit the area every
\nyear although rivers were regularly dredged.<\/p>\n
\"There have not been any reports of casualties. The losses
\nthat the disaster has inflicted on the people are being
\nestimated,\" Zainuddin was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
In Aceh, dozens of villages have been inundated and a 71-year-
\nold man drowned in the Ulee Glee village, Pidie regency, in the
\nmajor floods that have hit the area since Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Some 10,000 residents from dozens of villages in Pidie regency
\nwere evacuated to safer ground. Widespread flooding has also been
\nreported in the Jeunieb and Samalanga subdistricts, some 176
\nkilometers east of the capital, Banda Aceh.<\/p>\n
A flood in Jeunieb forced 500 families to flee their homes and
\nhundreds of hectares of paddy fields and shrimp ponds were
\ndestroyed. An irrigation system in Lhok Pudeng was damaged.<\/p>\n
Saleh Yacoub, head of the social services office in Aceh,
\nsaid his office could not send aid to the victims because it had
\nnot yet received complete reports from the field.<\/p>\n
\"I wonder why they (local officials) have failed to report on
\na disaster like this,\" he said.<\/p>\n
North Aceh Regent Karimuddin Hasjbullah visited the stricken
\nareas to hand over cash and a ton of rice yesterday.<\/p>\n
Heavy rains over the past two days have caused flooding in
\nseveral areas of Indonesia. In Central Java, three people were
\nreportedly killed, two injured and dozens of houses damaged
\nearlier this week.<\/p>\n
The three who reportedly died were women who had slipped and
\nfallen into the raging Wuluh River in Blora regency.<\/p>\n
In the Kebumen regency, the embankment of the Kethek river
\nburst and water inundated at least 50 houses and thousands of
\nhectares of fields in the districts of Adimulya, Puring and
\nPetanahan. Residents, however, have refused to seek shelter in
