        "content": "<p>Flood-stricken shop owners demand compensation<\/p>\n<p>Wahyuana<br>\nThe Jakarta Post\/Bekasi<\/p>\n<p>At least 300 owners of shops on the ground floor of Mal Mega <br>\nBekasi shopping mall on Monday demanded that the building <br>\nmanagement pay them compensation in money for the losses they <br>\nsuffered due to Sunday's floods.<\/p>\n<p>The traders refused compensation in the form of free promotion <br>\nor discounted fees and service charges that had been granted to <br>\nthem for losses in previous floods. They also demanded that the <br>\nmanagement relocate them to the upper floor.<\/p>\n<p>\"We need cash to rebuild our businesses after the floods ... <br>\nif the management fails to respond quickly, then we may take the <br>\ncase to court,\" the traders' coordinator, Rizaldi, remarked.<\/p>\n<p>The shopping mall is located on Jl. Ahmad Yani, near the <br>\nBekasi Barat toll exit, alongside Giant hypermarket, Metropolitan <br>\nMall I and II, Ramayana department store, Horison Hotel and Hero <br>\ndepartment store.<\/p>\n<p>While much of the ground floor was completely under water, the <br>\nparking lot, which is located above it was also flooded (photo).<\/p>\n<p>Kali Malang river -- which is located about 200 meters away <br>\nfrom the back of the shopping complex -- had overflowed at around <br>\n5 a.m. on Sunday after heavy rainfall from Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest flood compared to previous years', many traders <br>\nlost their merchandise valued at between Rp 200 million and Rp <br>\n400 million per shop.<\/p>\n<p>The housing estates located between Kali Malang and Citarum <br>\nrivers, such as Kemang Pratama I and II, Pondok Mitra Lestari, <br>\nSinar Pondok Gede, Vila Jatirasa, Pondok Gede Permai, Vila Nusa <br>\nIndah, Peduli Asih, Vila Kartini Park and Jaka Kencan, were also <br>\nflooded and remained so on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday's flood forced Bani Saleh Hospital on Jl. Kartini, East <br>\nBekasi, to evacuate 21 patients to Bekasi General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day, water flooded the emergency ward reaching a <br>\ndepth of 90 centimeters and submerging medical equipment and <br>\nmedicine, as well as vehicles in the parking lot.<\/p>",
