Flood kills six people in West Sumatra<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Six people have been killed in flashfloods that
\nattacked Solok regency, West Sumatra, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Regent Nurmawan said the floods originated in overflowing
\nrivers and tributaries that pass through the regency, Antara
\nreported.<\/p>\n
Dozens of houses were swept away by the flood and hundreds
\nothers were inundated. Many hectares of ricefields have also been
\naffected by the flooding, which hit the regency on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Nurmawan said it was the worst flooding to hit the regency in
\n17 years.<\/p>\n
The six people who died were all residents of Sako village in
\nMuaro Labuah district, which has been the worst affected by the
\nfloods. The district is surrounded by the Batang Lembang, Batang
\nBangko and Batang Suliti rivers and their tributaries.<\/p>\n
The rivers have overflowed because it has been pouring rain
\ncontinuously in almost all parts of West Sumatra since January.<\/p>\n
"Some of the winding tributaries are too small for the strong
\ncurrent," the regent said.<\/p>\n
The regent town of Solok has also been affected by floods with
\nwater as high as three meters reported in some areas, according
\nto Antara.<\/p>\n
So far, however, no casualties have been reported, Solok Mayor
\nMatsuddin Anang said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, from Semarang, Central Java, Antara reported that
\nfloods have submerged hundreds of ricefields and there are fears
\nthat crops will be totally destroyed.<\/p>\n
The Central Java administration said massive flooding had been
\nreported in both the Pemalang and Jepara regencies. (emb)<\/p>",
