In anticipation of floods in Jakarta as the rainy season is
\napproaching, the Jakarta regional administration should actively
\ntake specific flood measures, particularly by clearing open
\ndrains as well as river, lake and pool dredging.<\/p>\n
The cleaning and dredging are needed to increase the capacity
\nof the drainage channels when the wet season arrives.<\/p>\n
Many rivers in Jakarta, large and small, are dirty and in a
\npoor condition, and are getting shallower due to the accumulation
\nof waste. When rainfall is high, these streams will definitely
\noverflow and flooding is inevitable.<\/p>\n
The cost of dredging may be big, but the loss incurred due to
\na flood disaster is even greater. Therefore, cleaning and
\ndredging work is imperative.<\/p>\n
I agree with the Jakarta administration's move to ban the
\nconstruction of buildings along river plains, because such
\nsettlements have not only created an ugly sight but also
\nincreased the possibility of floods through improper waste
\ndisposal.<\/p>\n
