Flash flood kills nine in Aceh<\/p>\n

Flash floods swept through a village in the tsunami-stricken
\nprovince of Aceh, leaving nine people dead and 20 missing,
\nresidents and officials said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The floods, which destroyed about 30 homes in the village of
\nLawe Mengkudu in southeastern Aceh late Tuesday night, were
\ncaused when a river burst its banks after a day of heavy rain.<\/p>\n
Erizal, of the Southeast Aceh district police, said nine
\nbodies including that of a paramilitary officer, had been
\nrecovered by 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
About 18 people were injured, he was quoted by AFP as saying.<\/p>\n
Another policeman on duty at the same office, Burhanuddin,
\nsaid about 20 people were missing.<\/p>\n
Local police chief Ali Hussein said the death toll could rise
\nas rescue workers were looking for survivors in the rubble of
\nseveral houses and mud, AP reported.<\/p>\n
According to him, the injured people had been taken to
\nhospital.<\/p>\n
Many residents were asleep when the river surged, residents
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"The water came very fast but after about 30 minutes it had
\nalready subsided,\" said Sahdidun Beuh, a Lawe Mengkudu resident
\nspeaking by telephone.<\/p>\n
\"When the water came, people panicked. Many were shouting
\n'help' and it was pitch dark,\" Beuh said.<\/p>\n
He said he saw a three meter wall of water traveling at high
\nspeed towards the village.<\/p>\n
Flooding and landslides are common in Indonesia, with
\nenvironmentalists blaming illegal logging on mountainsides for
\nmany of the disasters.<\/p>\n
Aceh was hardest hit by the December earthquake and tsunamis
\nthat killed over 220,000 people and caused widespread
\ndestruction.<\/p>",
