Five years jail sought for two police killers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The prosecutor in the trial of two men charged
\nwith involvement in the March attack on two policemen in South
\nJakarta in which one policeman was killed has asked the court to
\nsentence the accused to five years imprisonment each.<\/p>\n
Usman told the South Jakarta District Court yesterday that
\nAmirsan Liskaloho and Zulkifli Nahumaruri attacked two policemen
\nin the Blok M area on March 6, resulting in the death of one of
\nthe policemen.<\/p>\n
\"I demand that the judge sentence each of the accused to five
\nyears in jail for the offense,\" Usman said.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecutor, Lt. Budi Prasetyo was killed in
\nthe attack, while Capt. Arman Depari survived.<\/p>\n
Budi was stabbed in the stomach. Both Budi and Arman were
\nstudents of the Jakarta Police Academy. According to the
\nprosecution, the two policemen were strolling in the Blok M
\nshopping area when they encountered a gang of hoodlums who
\nengaged them in a heated quarrel.<\/p>\n
Both Zulkifli and Amirsan hit and kicked the two officers,
\nUsman said.<\/p>\n
\"The accused have violated article 170 of the Criminal Code,\"
\nhe said. \"The maximum sentence is seven years imprisonment.\"<\/p>\n
The fact that the accuseds' actions sparked public unrest,
\ndisturbed public order and caused other people to be injured
\nshould be taken into account in sentencing, the prosecutor said.<\/p>\n
Neither of the accused was the killer of Budi, according to
\nthe prosecution case. Shortly after the attack, police shot dead
\nMario Lesbanu, who, with a friend, was believed to have stabbed
\nBudi to death. Franky Jufrimaudu, Mario's friend, died in police
\ncustody. Police said Franky died of heart failure.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said that Zulkifli and Amirsan attacked the two
\npolicemen along with six other street hoodlums. The six alleged
\naccomplices were Mario Lesbanu, Franky Jufrimaudu, James Rudi
\nLasatira, Reza Lawalata, Robinson Timisela, Idris Tuarita, Jimiko
\nDanyanto and Stevanus Van Capele.<\/p>\n
Reza and Idris, who were tried separately by the same court
\npleaded guilty yesterday. \"I kicked a man in white shirt after
\nfinding Mario and Franky fighting with him,\" Reza said, adding
\nthat he wanted to help his friends.<\/p>\n
Arman was wearing a white shirt when the attack occurred,
\nwhile Budi was wearing a green shirt. Reza and Idris both denied
\nkicking a man in a green shirt.<\/p>\n
\"I only kicked the man in the white shirt,\" Idris said,
\narguing that he ran away when people arrived.<\/p>\n
Both Reza and Idris said that police officers forced them to
\nadmit to kicking Budi Santosa, but maintained that they had
\nkicked only Arman Depari.<\/p>\n
The attack on the police officers sparked a massive operation
\nagainst suspected street hoodlums in Jakarta and elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Police and military officers arrested more than 15,000 street
\nhoodlums in Jakarta, Bekasi, Tangerang and Bogor. Some 700 of
\nthem underwent re-education courses at the city police and
\nmilitary headquarters and at Islamic boarding schools. While
\ndozens were brought to court, most were never tried and were
\neventually released.<\/p>\n
