Five witnesses testify at UNAS students' trial<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court heard
\ntestimonies from five witnesses in the trial of six of the 12
\nNational University students accused of destroying campus
\nproperty and assaulting members of the student regiment on Oct.
\n18 last year.<\/p>\n
The five witnesses are, Ibrahim Ansor and Hery Udin, alumnus
\nof the university and former members of the student regiment, and
\nRachmat Rianda, Saut Maruli and Syaiful Rachmat, members of the
\nAssociation of Nature Lovers (Himpala).<\/p>\n
The witnesses told presiding judge Moegihardjo on Thursday
\nthat none of them had actually seen the six defendants, also
\nmembers of Himpala, assaulting student regiment members or
\nburning the regiment's post.<\/p>\n
The six defendants, who were tried on Thursday, are Syech
\nAljufri, Agus Heryana Anirun, Wahyu Sugito, Kusnadi Darisan,
\nSudradjat Trisna and Indra Mulia Ismet Kamil, while another six
\ndefendants, who are waiting to be tried on March 23, are Yahdi
\nDjamhur, Reza Pahlevi, Darmawan Bahtiar, Rakai Aria Dipa
\nErlangga, Benedictus Satrio Widyanarto and Budi Murdiyanto.<\/p>\n
During the court session, Ibrahim also retracted his earlier
\ntestimony, which was given during a police questioning session,
\nwhich stated that he saw the six defendants burning the
\nregiment's headquarters and assaulting its members.<\/p>\n
Both Ibrahim and Hery went to their former campus at 1 p.m. to
\nattend a seminar which was held as part of the activities to
\ncelebrate the university's anniversary.<\/p>\n
Saut Maruli said the incident was triggered by various past
\nincidents and acts of intimidation carried out by some regiment
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
He also said he had reported the incidents to either the
\nrector's office or the nearest police precinct but no action was
\ntaken.<\/p>\n
Saut's statement was supported by another witness, Syaiful,
\nwho alleged that in August 1993 he was beaten by Mohammad Karim,
\na member of the regiment, and his friends. But that the Pasar
\nMinggu police precinct never took any action against them.<\/p>\n
The trial started at 10 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. Judge
\nMoegihardjo adjourned the trial until March 21. (mas)<\/p>",
