Five students wounded in protest<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Several people were injured when
\nsome 500 students clashed with police during a protest in Kupang,
\nEast Nusa Tenggara (NTT), opposing calls for the inclusion of the
\nJakarta Chapter in the Constitution.<\/p>\n
At least five students and some police officers sustained
\nfacial wounds, several of whom were taken to a nearby hospital
\nfor immediate medical treatment.<\/p>\n
The clash started after the students' demand for talks with
\nleaders of the province's Legislative Council was rejected, said
\nSr. Insp. Aleks Yohanis of the local police.<\/p>\n
The protesters from several state and private universities in
\nthe province demanded that the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR) reject calls for the inclusion of the Jakarta Charter,
\nwhich obliges Muslims to uphold syariah (Islamic law), in the
\n1945 Constitution.<\/p>\n
The protesting students urged the MPR, currently deliberating
\nthe constitutional amendment during its ongoing Annual Session,
\nto ensure that the freedom of religion continue to be protected
\nin the predominantly Muslim country.<\/p>\n

\nPancasila is Indonesia's state ideology. \"If the Jakarta Chapter
\nis included, NTT will declare independence,\" another banner read.
