Suppose I was a corrupt government official in the New Order
\nera, I would really feel elated with the present government under
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) because it has not taken
\nany action against the likes of me. Just think that half a year
\nhas elapsed since the introduction of the new government and not
\none of my corrupt colleagues has been brought to court.<\/p>\n
The absence of a clear attitude in handling persons like me,
\nincluding former president Soeharto, has created extra time for
\nme, enough to wipe out the traces of my corruption.<\/p>\n
1. I would pretend I am poor. I would launder my money taken
\nby fraud. That would be easy enough. I would just use the names
\nof distant relatives for my bank deposits. I would do the same
\nwith other documents like land titles and car ownership. I would
\nkeep the documents in a safe deposit box at a bank in Singapore.
\nNeat and effective, is it not?<\/p>\n
2. I would destroy all the documents of my fraud at the office
\n(because I am still a functionary). The explanation would be
\nsimple if an investigation is launched. I would simply say that
\nthe documents had disappeared. In our country it is common that
\nfiles are in chaotic order.<\/p>\n
3. I would pay a legal consultant to advise me on tricks to
\navoid legal prosecution.<\/p>\n
4. I would always smile sweetly to my new boss, a member of a
\npolitical party. These people are usually stupid in the technical
\nmatters of a ministry.<\/p>\n
5. I would always pay attention to the activities of my boss
\nfor his political party. I would pretend to be a sympathizer. I
\nwould vouch my long-standing sympathy to the struggle of his
\nparty.<\/p>\n
