Five shot in Banyumas clash<\/p>\n
BANYUMAS, Central Java: At least five people were shot when
\nlocal police fired their guns to break up a clash between
\nresidents of two neighboring villages in Banyumas regency on
\nTuesday morning.<\/p>\n
Another resident was injured after being trampled by the
\nbrawling crowd. A village administration office and dozens of
\nhouses were damaged.<\/p>\n
Police said three men were arrested during the clash between
\nresidents of Pejaten Sokaraja Wetan village and Pamijen village
\nof Sokaraja district.<\/p>\n
Banyumas Police chief Lt. Col. Johny H. Hutauruk said the five
\nvictims had been discharged from Margono Soekarjo Hospital in
\nPurwokerto after doctors removed the bullets from their bodies.<\/p>\n
\"The shooting of the five people was not on purpose. They were
\nhit by stray bullets when the officers fired warning shots at the
\nscene where only a few lights remained, as many lamps in the
\nvillage were damaged by people involved in the clash.<\/p>\n
\"So, there's no element of deliberateness,\" Johny said.<\/p>\n
The arrested residents were Susanto from Pamijen and two
\nothers from Pejaten.<\/p>\n
\"They're currently being questioned, because we believe they
\nknow details regarding the cause of the brawl,\" Johny said.<\/p>\n
Police believe the clash was sparked by a small dispute
\nbetween Susanto, 23, and a Pejaten villager who was celebrating
\nthe local win of the Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle
\n(PDI-P) along with other fellow villagers on Monday evening.<\/p>\n
Susanto and his motorcycle was said to have not been allowed
\nby the party revelers to pass through a street that connected the
\ntwo villages.<\/p>\n
Police said he was then surrounded by the group and forced to
\ndismount from the motorcycle. A member of the group then
\nallegedly punched him in the face.<\/p>\n
Susanto subsequently reported the incident to his fellow
\nvillagers, who then headed to Pejaten and vandalized several
\nstructures.<\/p>\n
Pejaten villagers, armed with machetes and other sharp
\nweapons, then rushed to Pamijen to take revenge. There, they
\ndamaged at least 20 homes, a car and the Pejaten administrative
\noffice.<\/p>\n
The brawl, which started at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, was only
\nbrought under control at 1 a.m. on Sunday, after troops were
\ndeployed at the scene.<\/p>",
