Five researchers get Unesco award<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Five young researchers and environmentalists
\nreceived a Man and Biosphere (MAB) Award from the United Nations
\nEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on
\nTuesday for their outstanding contribution in their field of
\nwork.<\/p>\n
The winners are Juniarto Tulius of Padang, West Sumatra, who
\nconducted research on the traditional medicine of the Mentawai
\npeople on Siberut island, West Sumatra, while Herda Pamela
\nHutabarat of Yayasan Alam Mitra Indonesia initiated an education
\nprogram for natural conservation in the Gunung Gede Pangrango
\nNational Park, West Java.<\/p>\n
Yus Rusila Noor of Bogor won an award for research on the
\nKuntul (heron) bird colony on Dua island and Pamujaan island;
\nSyaiful Anwar of North Aceh for research on mangrove forests; and
\nReni Sawitri, a young researcher from Bogor who worked on estuary
\necosystem management.<\/p>\n
The winners each get US$1,000, which was handed over by the
\nUnesco representative in Southeast Asia, accompanied by the
\nIndonesian Research Institute (LIPI) chairman, Sofyan Tsauri, and
\nCommodore Hambar Martono of the ministry of environment. (21\/edt)<\/p>",
