        "content": "<p>Five parties register for 2004 election<\/p>\n<p>A&apos;an Suryana, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Five political parties registered themselves on Monday with the<br>\nGeneral Elections Commission (KPU) to contest the 2004 polls,<br>\njust three days after they were screened by the Ministry of<br>\nJustice and Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>The Crescent and Star Party (PBB), the Indonesian Union Party<br>\n(PSI), the Justice and Unity Party of Indonesia (PKP Indonesia),<br>\nthe Star Party of Reform (PBR) and the National Concern Party<br>\n(PKPB) are the first to undergo the final stages of the screening<br>\nprocess to qualify for next year&apos;s general election.<\/p>\n<p>For the PBB, the final process will be a formality as it has<br>\nalready met the two percent electoral threshold required by the<br>\nelection law to be eligible for the 2004 election. The party won<br>\n11 seats in the House of Representatives in the last election in<br>\n1999, one seat above the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of the five political parties came to the KPU in<br>\norder to witness the registration process, including Yusril Ihza<br>\nMahendra, the chairman of the PBB, who is also the minister of<br>\njustice and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>Yusril, the PBB&apos;s deputy chairman Nursyamsi and secretary<br>\ngeneral M.S. Ka&apos;ban, were received by KPU secretary-general<br>\nSafdar Yusaac.<\/p>\n<p>The KPU is vetting the political parties which intend to<br>\ncontest next year&apos;s polls from July 9 through Oct. 9.<\/p>\n<p>Registration with the KPU is restricted to parties that have<br>\npassed administrative screening by the Ministry of Justice and<br>\nHuman Rights so as to obtain body corporate status.<\/p>\n<p>Parties registering with the KPU are required to fill in forms<br>\ndetailing their names, the names of their executives and other<br>\nrelevant facts.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The screening by the KPU will be held after the forms are<br>\nfilled in, and the outcome will be made public on Dec. 2 after<br>\nthe KPU&apos;s plenary meeting,&quot; KPU member Annas Urbaningrum said on<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The 2004 general election will be held in April of next year.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights declared nine<br>\npolitical parties eligible for the next stage on Thursday,<br>\nincluding the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI<br>\nPerjuangan), the winner of the 1999 elections.<\/p>\n<p>The Golkar Party, which finished second behind the PDI<br>\nPerjuangan, will register itself with the justice ministry on<br>\nWednesday.<\/p>",
