Five more species on export quota list<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Five more Indonesian animal species have been
\nadded to the export quota list set by the Convention on
\nInternational Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna
\n(CITES), an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The inclusion would be effective starting Sept. 20, head of
\nthe city forestry office, Purwadi Mangunwardoyo, said.<\/p>\n
The five species include four birds, Gelatik (Padada
\nOryzipora), Pancawarna (Leionthrix argentaurius), Beo biasa
\n(Gracula Religiosa), Cucak rawa (Pycnonotus zeylanicus), and one
\nreptile, Labi-labi (Callagur borneonsis).<\/p>\n
Purwadi said the five species were listed in Appendix II CITES
\nfor the animal quota export list deliberated last June at the
\nConference of the Parties X (COP X) CITES in Harare, Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n
\"The inclusion of the species in the export list is intended
\nto help preserve their existence,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Under the quota list, any export distribution of the species
\nis subject to approval from the country of origin and the
\ncountries of destination, he said, without giving details of the
\ntotal number of Indonesian animal species on the list.<\/p>\n
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, Indonesia's
\nexports of living creatures reached US$7.62 million between
\nJanuary and April this year.<\/p>\n
\"People involved in this export business must be aware of the
\ndanger of animal extinction,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Purwadi said that, in cooperation with the Nature Conservation
\nand Forest Management Directorate General, his office would
\ncontinue applying strict control over the distribution of the
\nanimal species in the export quota.<\/p>\n
\"It's very important for the public to know about the quota
\nrules for animals, because people, especially businesspeople,
\ntend to export living creatures freely. They do not care about
\nthe preservation as long as they make a lot of money,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Nature conservation director Dwiatmo Siswomartono said earlier
\nthere were still deeply embedded perceptions among Indonesians
\nthat keeping endangered animals as pets carried prestige.<\/p>\n
\"The more protected an animal, the more they will strive to
\nget one for a pet,\" Dwiatmo said.<\/p>\n
Purwadi admitted that the five species did not belonged to the
\nrare-animal classification and have not been listed as endangered
\nspecies in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"It's quite easy to find them in Indonesia, but in India,
\nAfrica or other countries, those species are considered as
\nprotected animals because their numbers are very small,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Purwadi also said that his office is continuing its joint
\noperations against illegal animal market distribution with the
\ncustoms and excise directorate general and the flora-fauna
\nquarantine agency.<\/p>\n
\"Over the past eight months, we've already confiscated 109
\nprotected animals, ranging from birds to mammals, in several
\nmarkets throughout the city,\" he said.<\/p>\n
They were confiscated from several fauna markets, including
\nPasar Pramuka, East Jakarta, and Pasar Barito, Kebayoran Baru,
\nSouth Jakarta, and from the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport,
\nwhich is known as a transit site for animal smuggling.<\/p>\n
\"The sellers of the protected animals, who were caught in the
\noperations, will be processed according to the existing law.
\nTheir cases are currently being handled by the Jakarta Police,\"
