Five killed in Timika clash<\/p>\n
TIMIKA, Irian Jaya (JP): Five people were killed in a clash
\nbetween native Irianese and migrants in the Irian Jaya regency of
\nTimika, an officer said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sgt. Stefanus of the Timika Police told The Jakarta Post the
\nnumber of casualties could rise once the police completed their
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
Stefanus also said the police had yet to determine the cause
\nof the clash.<\/p>\n
\"What we have now is just a provisional report. The number of
\nvictims could be more than what we have been told,\" Stefanus said
\nvia telephone.<\/p>\n
Stefanus said that at around 8:30 p.m. local time, a fight
\nbroke out involving migrants and native Irianese, during which
\ntwo Irianese were wounded.<\/p>\n
Shortly after this, the Irianese retaliated by killing five
\nmigrants with their traditional bows and arrows.<\/p>\n
The two wounded Irianese were believed to have received stab
\nwounds from knives.<\/p>\n
All of the victims were taken to a private hospital belonging
\nto mining company PT Freeport Indonesia shortly after the clash
\nended, and their identities have yet to be established.<\/p>\n
The incident caused a riot which resulted in a public market
\nand bus terminal being burned.<\/p>\n
Personnel from the Indonesian Military and the police were
\ndeployed to the scene and fired warning shots to disperse the
\ncrowd.<\/p>\n
As of late Thursday, the area remained tense, with no vehicles
\non the streets except those belonging to security personnel.<\/p>\n
Both migrants and native Irianese were reportedly on the alert
\nfor possible renewed clashes.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Amungme Tribal Consultative Institution
\nsummoned local figures to a meeting in an effort to prevent the
\nsituation from worsening.<\/p>\n
The institution said the two native Irianese wounded in the
\nclash were from the Nduga and Dani tribes.<\/p>\n
A man identified as Leo Pogolamon, 27, also was reported to
\nhave suffered gunshot wounds when security personnel opened fire
\nto disperse the crowd, the institution reported. (34\/emf)<\/p>",
