Five injured in police attack<\/p>\n

Dozens of riot police ran amok in a housing complex here on
\nTuesday following a minor accident involving an officer and a
\nlocal resident, leaving five people wounded.<\/p>\n
To the surprise of many, only one of the police personnel,
\nSecond Brig. Misri Kordian Telaumbanua, was detained on Wednesday
\nfor allegedly inciting the violence, the second incident to have
\ninvolved riot police and residents within four days.<\/p>\n
The angry officers, armed with rifles, attacked a house on Jl.
\nAR Hakim and beat the five residents after they failed to find a
\nman identified as Junaidi, whom they accused of throwing a stone
\nat Misri earlier on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The police scoured the housing complex to take revenge for the
\nattack on Misri, widely known as Ucok Nias. Witnesses said
\nJunaidi stoned Misri after the latter had struck the resident of
\nLanggar Lane inside the housing complex, while speeding on his
\nmotorcycle.<\/p>\n
The injured residents, identified as Burhanuddin, Ucok Uban,
\nZaenal, Azam and Suko were rushed to the hospital. They were
\nbeaten, as they had resisted the raid.<\/p>\n
The house vandalized by the angry officers belongs to Sarmin,
\nwho managed to escape the attack unhurt.<\/p>\n
Misri has been declared a suspect in the incident, while his
\ncolleagues who joined him in the attack are still being
\nquestioned as witnesses.<\/p>\n
Medan Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bagus Kurniawan, who
\noversees the riot police unit, has not commented on the violence,
\nnor sought an apology from the residents.<\/p>\n
On the contrary, Bagus immediately went to the Navy base in
\nBelawan to apologize for another incident involving another riot
\npolice officer, Chief Brig. Jadi Zulianus Perangin-angin.<\/p>\n
Zulianus was detained, also on Wednesday, after he shot a
\nMarine, First Corp. Gunardi, following a fight in a cafe on Jl.
\nCapt. Rahman Budin on Tuesday. Gunardi suffered a gunshot wound
\nto his left leg.<\/p>\n
In order to promote peace, the Medan Police have covered the
\nmedical expenses for treating Gunardi at Gleneagles Hospital in
\nMedan. It remains unknown whether the police have made the same
\noffer to five residents beaten in separate violence on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Bagus said the case involving his personnel and the Marine was
\nnow closed, except for the legal processing of Zulianus.<\/p>\n
Two other riot policemen, identified as First Brig. Budi
\nSulistiyo and Second Brig. Mucklis, were detained earlier for
\nallegedly beating Edy Anthony to death at a police station on Jl.
\nPerniagaan last Friday.<\/p>\n
Medan Police chief of detectives Adj. Comr. Maruli Siahaan
\nsaid the police were committed to upholding the law. \"So far we
\nhave always detained errant personnel and brought them to
\njustice,\" he said.<\/p>",
