Five golds hoped from powerlifting<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia expects to snatch five out of the 88
\ngold medals up for grabs at the world junior powerlifting
\nchampionships to be held in Bali next week.<\/p>\n
Budiono Kartohadiprodjo, executive chairman of the Indonesian
\nAssociation of Powerlifting, Weightlifting and Body Building
\n(PABBSI), told newsmen yesterday that the event is expected to be
\njoined by muscle men and women from 23 countries.<\/p>\n
Budiono, however, said that only four countries, including
\nIndonesia, are currently registered for the event. The three
\ninternational contenders are from Japan, India and Taiwan.<\/p>\n
The Philippines, India and South Korea, Asia's powerhouses in
\nthe sport are expected to submit their entry lists soon, Budiono
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Nineteen Indonesian hopefuls will represent their country in
\nthe event due to start on June 21 at the Amphie Theater of at
\nNusa Dua.<\/p>\n
"The group is divided equally between the men's and women's
\nteams," he said as quoted by the Suara Pembaruan daily yesterday.<\/p>\n
He remarked that at least five gold medals should go to the
\nfollowing powerlifters: Agustini (67.5 kg) and Mingguriati (52
\nkg) for the women's contests, Komarudin (56 kg), Sutrisno (60 kg)
\nand Syahroni (75 kg) - the world-record holder for this class
\nsince last year.<\/p>\n
Syahroni produced the record in the world championship in
\nHamilton, Canada last year in which Indonesia sent three lifters
\nand won two golds, one by Syahroni and another by Komarudin.<\/p>\n
"We expect Syahroni to better his records," Budiono said.<\/p>\n
He said that the Bali event will include the bench press,
\nsquat, power lift and total lift. (hdj)<\/p>",
