Five fishermen feared drowned<\/p>\n
PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: Authorities here are
\ncontinuing their search for five missing local fishermen whose
\nboat was allegedly burned by a group of foreign fishermen on
\nMarch 19.<\/p>\n
\"With the help of local fishermen, we are continuing to search
\nalong the Kuala Pembuang coast in East Kotawaringin district,\"
\nsaid provincial police chief Lt. Col. Ade Sudarna.<\/p>\n
\"We aren't sure whether those who burned the boat were Thais
\nor not, but they were surely foreign fishermen,\" he said as
\nquoted by Antara on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The attack occurred about 50 kilometers off the Kuala Pembuang
\ncoast.<\/p>\n
One fisherman, Syahminin, survived the attack and remains the
\nsole witness to the incident.<\/p>\n
The other five -- Jallaluddin, Junaidi, Jumadi, Sabrani and
\nIjun -- are feared to have drowned.<\/p>\n
Syahminin said the motive of the foreign fishermen-arsonists
\nwas not clear.<\/p>\n
\"It seemed that they did not intend to pirate, but only to
\neliminate eyewitnesses of what they were doing -- fishing
\nillegally in Indonesian waters with large trawlers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Sudarna, Central Kalimantan waters, especially in
\nWest and East Kotawaringin districts, are a favored place for
\nillegal fishing among Thai fishermen.<\/p>",
