        "content": "<p>Five dead, 41 missing in Indonesia ferry fire<\/p>\n<p>A total of 225 people on the vessel were rescued, said the regional\nSurabaya Search and Rescue Agency, which provided the latest figures in\nan afternoon update.<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA: An Indonesian ferry caught fire at sea on Sunday (Aug 2),\nkilling five people and leaving another 41 missing after some jumped\noverboard, search and rescue officials said.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 225 people on the vessel were rescued, said the regional\nSurabaya Search and Rescue Agency, which provided the latest figures in\nan afternoon update.<\/p>\n<p>Some passengers jumped into the sea and were picked up by a nearby\nship, according to Basarnas, Indonesia\u2019s National Search and Rescue\nAgency.<\/p>\n<p>Four other vessels were on standby near the ferry but could not\napproach because of the risk posed by flammable material on the ferry,\nit said.<\/p>\n<p>The captain had called the ferry company to report the fire as the\nvessel sailed from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi,\nBasarnas said.<\/p>\n<p>The captain had not been in contact since then, it said.<\/p>\n<p>A larger rescue operation was heading to the site from Surabaya, a\nsix-hour journey from the site of the disaster, Basarnas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on preliminary reports from the field, passengers are waiting\nto be evacuated by the vessels in the vicinity of the incident site,\u201d\nsaid Muhammad Masyhud, a senior official at the Ministry of\nTransportation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of passengers and crew is our top priority. We are\ncontinuously coordinating with all relevant parties to ensure that the\nevacuation process can proceed quickly, safely, and effectively,\u201d he\nsaid in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Marine accidents are a regular occurrence in Indonesia, an\narchipelago of more than 17,000 islands, partly due to lax safety\nstandards and unpredictable weather.<\/p>\n<p>A ferry transporting more than 70 people sank last month while\nsailing near Selayar, a small tropical island south of the much larger\nSulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>At least four people were found dead, and 14 others remained missing\nuntil the end of the search operation.<\/p>",
