Five artists 'intervene' in CCF's public spaces<\/p>\n

Five young artists experimenting with sound, lighting and other
\ninstallations have turned the library, toilet, cafe and gallery
\nat the Centre Culturel Francais (CCF) building into fun places,
\nproviding a new experience for visitors.<\/p>\n
Opened on April 14, the exhibition, titled cARTe blanche #5:
\nPassage, presents Aditya Satria, Andry Mochamad, Jompet, Paul
\nKadarisman and Sulasmoro, each of whom has installed his own
\ncreation to convey more or less the same message.<\/p>\n
Curator Agung Hujatnikajennong says that the exhibition wants
\nto \"intervene\" in public spaces.<\/p>\n
\"Objects in this exhibition are present in a simple form, such
\nthat they appear disguised from the objects that usually sneak
\nunobtrusively into CCF's rooms,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Therefore, to see the exhibition, visitors should obtain a map
\nprovided in the gallery's lobby because, unusually, the
\nexhibition not only uses the gallery but also other places.<\/p>\n
For example, employing a sensor, Jompet from Yogyakarta has
\nset up in the CCF library a box containing a large portrait of
\nhimself carrying a pistol. Every time a person walks past the
\nbox, it says \"Je suis pareseu, je suis idiot\" (\"I'm lazy, I'm
\nstupid\").<\/p>\n
Titled Me and Samin, the creation was inspired by the Samin
\ncommunity in Central Java during the colonial period when they
\nresisted the Dutch by pretending to be stupid.<\/p>\n
The pistol held by the portrait wants to say that in public
\nspaces around us, ideological and political interests develop in
\nthe background.<\/p>\n
Agung, who work as curator at Selasar Sunaryo Gallery,
\nBandung, notes that Me and Samin is the only object of the
\nexhibition that contains a political message.<\/p>\n
Also in the library, Andry Mochamad, with his Liberte Songs,
\nhas put two old electronic pianos on the second floor. He wants
\nto test visitors on whether they are brave enough to play the
\npiano in a library, where silence usually rules.<\/p>\n
Near the piano, Paul Kadarisman has displayed some photographs
\nhe took years ago at a zoo. He calls his attempt Zoo Memorabilia.<\/p>\n
A few meters further inside the building, Sulasmoro from
\nBandung has wired venues like a classroom, the male rest room and
\nthe library with microphones linked to speakers placed below
\ntables in the CCF cafe.<\/p>\n
Therefore, cafe patrons can listen to conversations and noises
\nfrom other parts of the building while sipping beer or espresso,
\nthanks to Sound Surveillance.<\/p>\n
With his installation 1000 Watt, Aditya Satria from Jakarta
\noffers a new experience in entering a gallery space. Instead of
\nbeing presented by art objects, visitors are exposed to a bright
\nflash from a 1000-watt light bulb.<\/p>\n
However, to really relish the sensation of the high-powered
\nflash, visitors should enter the gallery some time after the
\nprevious visitor has been there.<\/p>\n
Due to its high power, the light responds quite slowly to the
\nsensor installed at the doorway.<\/p>\n
